It has been observed that the non-implementation of\nenvironmental laws and policies has continued to serve as a major setback in\nthe fight against climate change in Nigeria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was observed by stakeholders at the end of a Youth\nClimate Incubation Hub held recently in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, organised\nby the Federal Ministry of Environment in partnership with the United Nations\nDevelopment Programme (UNDP) and Health of the Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hub, which was held to further strengthen Nigeria\u2019s\nposition as a member country of the United Nations\u2019 Youth Engagement and Public\nMobilization track at the Climate Action Summit in September 2019, had 60\nyouths in attendance from the South-South states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said issues of climate change call for emergency\nresponses in Nigeria and that proactive measures must be put in place by the\nNigerian government to tackle them, noting that policy implementation, stopping\ngas flaring and converting the emitted gas must be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While recommending eco-friendly technological solutions,\nincluding Apps to map vulnerable and non-vulnerable areas to climate change\nimpact, they called for mangrove reclamation and tree planting, especially\nindigenous and economic crops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said there should be a generation of biogas from household biodegradable waste and bio-digester and that effort should be made on recycling as regards plastic bottles collection and reuse, conversion to other products and also waste segregation and separation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, an Environmental Justice Advocate and Director of\nHOMEF, Nnimmo Bassey, has said the hub underscored the importance of the Youth\nRoundtable on Climate Action, which is to unlock youth innovativeness in\nNigeria\u2019s climate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 He said young people\nhave the brightest ideas for solving problems of climate change in the country.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the Senior Scientific Officer at the Department of\nClimate Change, Sa\u2019adatu Gambo, said the department is always eager and ready\nto welcome creative ideas from young people on how to solve problems of climate\nchange which have become a serious global threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 They, however, agreed\nthat there is need to create more awareness among the Nigeria citizenry,\nfinancial investment and transfer of technology to build human capacity and\ngroom basic ideas that will mitigate climate crises in the country. Read the original\narticle<\/a> on Daily Trust<\/a>.
