said Cesare Galli of Aventea, an Italian\ncompany that conducted the artificial fertilization procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya Wildlife Service, in\nconjunction with Germany&#8217;s Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research and\nKralove Zoo from the Czech Republic, has been conducting research on artificial\nbreeding aimed at halting the extinction of northern white rhino species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research&#8217;s breakthrough\nwas announced on Aug. 23 when ten eggs were harvested from the two female\nnorthern white rhinos named Fatu and Najin that are under protection at Ol\nPejeta Conservancy located in northern Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Najib Balala, Kenya&#8217;s cabinet\nsecretary for tourism and wildlife hailed the successful harvesting of eggs\nthat will be inseminated with frozen sperms from northern white rhino bulls\nthat are already dead. &#8220;The concerted efforts to save the last northern\nwhite rhinos should guide the resolutions the world makes at the ongoing CITES\nmeeting in Geneva,&#8221; said Balala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assisted reproductive\ntechnique should galvanize the world&#8217;s attention to the plight of all rhinos\nand make us avoid decisions that undermine law enforcement and fuel demand for\nthe rhino horn,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galli said that breeding a\nnorthern white rhino through artificial means could mark a milestone in efforts\nto save the iconic species whose extinction is linked to wanton poaching and\nclimatic stresses. &#8220;Now the injected oocytes are incubated and we need to\nwait to see if any viable embryo develops to the stage where it can be\ncryopreserved for later transfer,&#8221;
