Kenya has exported its first batch of oil as President\nUhuru Kenyatta flagged off the crude shipment from the port of Mombasa on\nMonday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is being described as a historic day and an important\nstep on the way to the full exploration and development of oil in the East\nAfrican nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an experimental phase to test the country\u2019s crude\noil before full production and exportation begins in around 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country is expected to earn $84m (\u00a369m) over the next\ntwo years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK-based Chinese company ChemChina UK Ltd won the bid to\nbuy the first batch of 240,000 barrels under the Early Oil Pilot Scheme (EOPS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oil bids were received from firms in Asia and Europe, but\nthe joint oil production consortium, led by explorer Tullow Oil, awarded the\ncontract to ChemChina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crude was transported 850km (528 miles) by road from\nthe country\u2019s north-western oil fields in Turkana to Mombasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya currently does not have an oil pipeline in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A plan to build a joint pipeline with Uganda failed after\nKampala opted to partner with Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
