Heads of State and government leaders from the\nbloc\u2019s 16 member countries have called for a comprehensive multi-year response\nplan for the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders said that prolonged drought and floods, which hit Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, have exacerbated the problem. In addition, poor harvesting and the effects of climate change have been a major reason for the disaster, they noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to\nDomingos Gove, the SADC secretariat director for agriculture, food and natural\nresource, only Zambia and South Africa have adequate food supplies in their\ngranaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur regional\nstates have experienced poor rainfall, the lowest recorded in the past 15\nyears,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that\nthe SADC Environmental Vulnerability Assessment Committee was monitoring the\nsituation in the different bloc member states. \u201cWe are working with various\nnational environmental vulnerability committees. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/scienceandhealth\/SADC-members-face-food-shortage\/3073694-5248544-25sfpmz\/index.html\">Read more\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Apolinari Tairo The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has a food shortage with an overall decline in food production.
