Forests support our overall well-being and are also a source of income\u2014we depend on forests and forests depend on us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Mabira Forest is\nat risk of being wiped out due to an increasing population, high demand for\ncharcoal and agricultural encroachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mabira Forest is one\nof few remaining tropical&nbsp;rainforests in Uganda&nbsp;covering an area of\nabout 300 square kilometres. One of the country\u2019s biggest reserves, it is home\nto many endangered species like the primate&nbsp;<em>Lophocebus ugandae<\/em>, a\nspecies of monkey found only in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uganda has experienced\nsevere deforestation over the last decade and has one of the highest rates of\ndeforestation and forest degradation in the world. In 1990, forest cover was\nestimated at 24 per cent of total land area; by 2015, it was down to 12.4 per\ncent; today, it is at 9 per cent.
