{"id":4843,"date":"2019-08-23T09:55:19","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T06:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4843"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","slug":"giraffes-given-greater-protection-from-unregulated-trade-as-numbers-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/23\/giraffes-given-greater-protection-from-unregulated-trade-as-numbers-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"Giraffes Given Greater Protection From Unregulated Trade As Numbers Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By BBC News<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Giraffe conservation has taken a big step\nforward with the world&#8217;s tallest mammals receiving enhanced protection from\nunregulated trade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move will regulate the trade in giraffes\nand their body parts under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered\nSpecies (Cites).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vote was overwhelmingly approved, although\nsome countries opposed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giraffe numbers in Africa have fallen by 40%\nin the past 30 years, in what is being called a &#8220;silent extinction&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p03yjvsl\"><strong>The importance of giraffes<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mammals are largely targeted for bush meat\nbut body parts are also used to make products including jewelry, bracelets and\npurses, the proposal stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The motion came from the Central African\nRepublic, Chad, Kenya, Mali, Niger and Senegal, where giraffe populations have\nbeen diminishing heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there was resistance from southern African\ncountries, including South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania, where giraffes have\nfared better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They argued that there was scant evidence to\nsuggest international trade was contributing to the decline of the giraffe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the opposition, 106 parties voted in\nfavor of the motion, 21 voted against, with seven abstentions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-49440949\">Read more&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By BBC News Giraffe conservation has taken a big step forward with the world&#8217;s tallest mammals receiving enhanced protection from unregulated trade.
