{"id":4821,"date":"2019-08-22T10:03:14","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T07:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4821"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","slug":"dr-congo-president-warns-over-risk-to-forest-reserves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/22\/dr-congo-president-warns-over-risk-to-forest-reserves\/","title":{"rendered":"DR Congo President Warns Over Risk To Forest Reserves"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BY AFP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DR Congo\nPresident Felix Tshisekedi has warned the country&#8217;s vast forest\nresources\u2014crucial to countering global warning\u2014are at risk without faster\ndevelopment of its huge hydro-electricity potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Congo River\nbasin forest region is one of the largest in the world after the Amazon and,\nlike the South American rain forests, it plays a vital role in absorbing global\ncarbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with\nillegal logging, the forest is threatened by the production of charcoal, a key\nenergy resource for inhabitants because of the lack of electricity supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Given\nthat more than 90 per cent of the energy consumed in the DRC comes from wood,\nthe lack of programmes to deliver clean and renewable energy is a direct threat\nto our forests,&#8221; Tshisekedi said at an energy forum on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;At the\ncurrent pace of population growth and energy demands, our forests risk\nextinction by 2100.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Congo basin\nforest covers two thirds of the country or around 1.5 million kilometre square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of\n2018, DR Congo authorities announced a deal for a Spanish-Chinese consortium to\ndevelop the Inga 3 hydro-electric mega-dam project on the Congo River rapids,\none of the world&#8217;s most powerful and a key part of the country&#8217;s energy plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project has\nbeen delayed and both residents and environmental activists are concerned about\nits impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We must\nget past this paradox of being a country that is one of the world&#8217;s top five in\nhydroelectric potential but one that ranks among the worst in access to\nelectricity,&#8221; the DRC leader said.
