{"id":4803,"date":"2019-08-22T09:02:31","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T06:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4803"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","slug":"nigeria-goes-three-years-without-a-case-of-polio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/22\/nigeria-goes-three-years-without-a-case-of-polio\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Goes Three Years Without A Case Of Polio"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By BBC Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nigeria has gone three years without a case of polio, putting it\non the brink of being declared free of the disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nis a dramatic change from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/news\/releases\/2016\/nigeria-polio\/en\/\">2012 when the country accounted for more than half\nof all polio cases worldwide, the World Health Organization has said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The head of the\nprimary health care agency, Dr Faisal Shuaib, said Nigeria had reached a\n&#8220;historic milestone&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it will be several\nmonths before the country can officially be labelled polio-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first criteria, no\ncase for three years, has been achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now the WHO needs\nto make sure there is a robust surveillance system in Nigeria to be certain\nthat there are no further cases of the wild polio virus<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria is the last\ncountry in Africa to have witnessed a case of polio &#8211; in Borno state, in the\nnorth-east. Outside of Nigeria, the last case on the continent was in the\nPuntland region of Somalia, in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insecurity in the\nnorth-east of Nigeria had hindered the polio vaccination programme, but success\nin fighting the Boko Haram militant group has been cited as one of the reasons\nbehind getting polio under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, officials\nhave said that political support and an injection of funds have also helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, there was a\ntotal of 33 polio cases confined to just two countries: Afghanistan and\nPakistan\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-49426886\">Read more&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By BBC Africa Nigeria has gone three years without a case of polio, putting it on the brink of being declared free of the disease.
