Student\nactivist Greta Thunberg’s school strike movement marked its first anniversary\non Tuesday after a year that has seen the schoolgirl rise from a solitary\nprotester to a leading figure in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\nis a timeline on how the “Fridays for Future” school strikes\ndeveloped into a global movement and some of the controversies it has seen\nalong the way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 20, 2018:<\/strong> Swedish student Thunberg, then\naged 15, skips school to protest outside parliament for more action against\nclimate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 26, 2018:<\/strong> The student activist is joined by\nfellow students, teachers and parents at another protest and begins attracting\nmedia attention for her climate campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 2018:<\/strong> Thunberg begins a regular ‘strike’\nfrom classes every Friday to protest climate issues. She invites other students\nto join her weekly “Fridays for Future” campaign by staging walkouts\nat their own schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 2018:<\/strong> More than 17,000 students in 24\ncountries take part in Friday school strikes<\/strong><\/a>. Thunberg begins speaking at high-profile events across Europe\nincluding United Nations climate talks in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 2019:<\/strong> Protests directly inspired by\nThunberg take place across more than 30 countries, from Sweden to Brazil, India\nand the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

March 2019:<\/strong> Thunberg is nominated for a Nobel\nPeace Prize. The number of students taking part in school strikes hits more\nthan 2 million people across 135 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2019:<\/strong> Thunberg is named one of the world’s most influential people<\/strong><\/a> by Time magazine, appearing on its\ncover. “Now I am speaking to the whole world,” she wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 2019:<\/strong> Conservative and far-right\nlawmakers urge <\/strong><\/a>a boycott of Thunberg’s appearance in\nFrench parliament, mocking her as a “guru of the apocalypse” and a\n“Nobel prize of fear”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 1, 2019:<\/strong> Thunberg hits back at “hate\nand conspiracy campaigns” after she was described as a “deeply\ndisturbed messiah” leading a “cult” in an opinion column by\nconservative Australian commentator Andrew Bolt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 5, 2019:<\/strong> Some 450 young “Fridays for\nFuture” climate activists from 37 European countries gather for a summit\nin Lausanne, Switzerland to discuss the movement’s development and work on\ninternational cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
