{"id":4741,"date":"2019-08-20T10:31:26","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T07:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4741"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:29","slug":"smes-growth-factors-go-beyond-financing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/20\/smes-growth-factors-go-beyond-financing\/","title":{"rendered":"SMEs Growth Factors Go Beyond Financing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Susan Situma<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without doubt, across\nall levels of development, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the engines\nof growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They create jobs, contribute to the gross domestic product, support industrial development, satisfy local demand, lead in innovations and support larger industries with inputs and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Kenya, the SMEs have\ngrown to a highly vibrant and dynamic sector of the Kenyan economy over the\nlast few decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to government\nestimates, there are about 1.56 million licensed and 5.85 million unlicensed\nbusinesses in both formal and informal sectors. These businesses engaged about\n14.9 million persons in employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politically, SMEs have been credited for helping to promote reforms. The sector plays a big role in tailoring and pushing for reforms that favor a level playing field.
