{"id":4708,"date":"2019-08-20T08:30:05","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T05:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4708"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:28","slug":"elephant-protection-debate-to-dominate-conservation-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/20\/elephant-protection-debate-to-dominate-conservation-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Elephant Protection Debate To Dominate Conservation Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Matt McGrath<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different\napproaches to protecting elephants are set to dominate the debate at a key\nconservation conference starting in Geneva today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delegates from more than 180 countries\nare gathering for the meeting of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cites.org\/\">Convention\non International Trade in Endangered Species<\/a>&nbsp;(Cites).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some African nations are again pushing to reopen the\ntrade in ivory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, others are seeking the highest possible\nprotections for all of Africa&#8217;s elephants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cites meeting, held every three\nyears, will discuss a record&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cites.org\/eng\/cop\/18\/prop\/index.php\">56\nproposals<\/a>submitted by governments to the\nConference of the Parties, known as COP18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The COP was due to be held in Sri Lanka\nearlier this year but was moved to Switzerland in the wake of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/topics\/cdmmjkw6krwt\/sri-lanka-easter-bombings\">bomb\nattacks at Easter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key among the items on the agenda will be competing ideas\non how to protect African elephants, which have seen a huge decline in numbers\ndue to poaching over the past 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study published in 2016 estimated that 30-40,000 of the\ngiant creatures were killed by poachers every year with roughly 400,000 left in\ntotal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many parts of Africa, elephants are\nprotected under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cites.org\/eng\/disc\/how.php\">Cites\nAppendix I<\/a>, which means that trade is\nonly permitted under exceptional circumstances\u2026.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-49372409\">Read more&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Matt McGrath Different approaches to protecting elephants are set to dominate the debate at a key conservation conference starting in Geneva today.
