Their research shows chocolate,\ncoffee and bath products with sustainability claims&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/us\/en\/insights\/report\/2018\/whats-sustainability-got-to-do-with-it\/\">grew\nmuch faster than their traditional counterparts<\/a>. Yet only 0.2 per cent of\nchocolates and 0.4 per cent of coffees have environmental claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can we translate this consumer sustainability buzz into\nactual action? To find out, our group reviewed 320 academic articles in the top\nconsumer behaviour journals and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0022242919825649?journalCode=jmxa\">identified\nfive routes to shift consumers towards sustainable choices<\/a>: social\ninfluence, habits, individual self, feelings and cognitions, and tangibility.\nTogether, these make a handy acronym, SHIFT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social influence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans are social animals and will follow the actions of\nothers, especially on ethical issues. When people learn they are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jenvp.2014.11.002\">using more energy than their\nneighbours<\/a>, they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jenvp.2005.08.002\">decrease\ntheir energy usage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if the sustainable behaviour has yet to be\nestablished? For example, how does one convince people to install solar panels\nif no one in their neighbourhood is doing it? A \u201cbrand ambassador\u201d can be\ninvaluable.
