In Mali, twice as many children have been killed in the\nfirst half of this year than in all of 2018, a new report by UN children’s\nagency Unicef has found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says that more than 150 were killed between January and\nthe end of June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite recent ceasefire deals between the government and\narmed groups, insecurity is deteriorating in the centre of the country. Most\nattacks in the area are believed to be perpetrated by armed militias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recruitment of children to armed groups has doubled in\ncomparison to the same period last year, says Unicef, which warns that extreme\nviolence causes debilitating, long-term trauma in young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reports says other children were injured, displaced and\nseparated from their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This data has not been corroborated by the government but\nauthorities have been under growing pressure to appease tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN’s independent human rights expert on Mali said in\nhis last report that children\u2019s rights violations were under-reported, and also\nvoiced concern about a lack of protection for victims and witnesses.
