{"id":4515,"date":"2019-08-13T12:28:54","date_gmt":"2019-08-13T09:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4515"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:28","slug":"ebola-drugs-show-90-survival-rate-in-breakthrough-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/13\/ebola-drugs-show-90-survival-rate-in-breakthrough-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebola Drugs Show \u201890% Survival Rate\u2019 In Breakthrough Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BBC NEWS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ebola may soon be a\n&#8220;preventable and treatable&#8221; disease after a trial of two drugs showed\nsignificantly improved survival rates, scientists have said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four drugs were\ntrialled on patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where there is a\nmajor outbreak of the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 90% of infected\npeople can survive if treated early with the most effective drugs, the research\nshowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drugs will now be\nused to treat all patients with the disease in DR Congo, according to health\nofficials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US National\nInstitute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which co-sponsored the\ntrial, said the results are &#8220;very good news&#8221; for the fight against\nEbo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drugs, named\nREGN-EB3 and mAb114, work by attacking the Ebola virus with antibodies,\nneutralizing its impact on human cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are the\n&#8220;first drugs that, in a scientifically sound study, have clearly shown a\nsignificant diminution in mortality&#8221; for Ebola patients, said Dr Anthony\nFauci, director of NIAID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>REGN-EB3 and mAb114\nwere developed using antibodies harvested from survivors of Ebola, which has\nkilled more than 1,800 people in DR Congo in the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two other treatments,\ncalled ZMapp and Remdesivir, have been dropped from trials as they were found\nto be less effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What were the results of the trial?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial, conducted\nby an international research group co-ordinated by the World Health\nOrganization (WHO), began in November last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, four\nexperimental drugs have been tested on around 700 patients, with the\npreliminary results from the first 499 now known.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By BBC NEWS Ebola may soon be a &#8220;preventable and treatable&#8221; disease after a trial of two drugs showed significantly improved survival rates, scientists have said.
