{"id":4479,"date":"2019-08-09T10:32:40","date_gmt":"2019-08-09T07:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4479"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:28","slug":"ghana-forestry-commission-denies-illegal-logging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/09\/ghana-forestry-commission-denies-illegal-logging\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana Forestry Commission Denies Illegal Logging"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Thomas Naadi<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ghana\u2019s\nforestry commission has denied allegations that they supporting the illegal\nrosewood trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-49165636\"><strong>A report by the Environmental Investigation Agency&#8217;s (EIA) said<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that, in the past seven years, some six million rosewood trees had been cut down for illegal export to China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosewood\nis one of the endangered tree species found in northern and parts of central\nGhana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nreport said that the felling of the rare trees had continued despite a ban\nwhich was put in place in 2013. It blamed corrupt government officials for\nissuing illegal documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement\nreleased on Thursday, the forestry commission said the claims were false and\nthe former executive director of wildlife division Nana Kofi Adu-Nsiah denied\nany wrongdoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nforestry commission said that the ban was lifted during certain periods over\nthe last six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\nalso said some 200,000 trees had been cut down and not six million as reported\nby the EIA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EIA\nhas called for a stop to the trade of rosewood and for China to comply with\ninternational agreements on endangered species.
