{"id":4414,"date":"2019-08-07T09:38:44","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T06:38:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4414"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:27","slug":"eabl-parent-puts-sh22bn-in-clean-energy-water-at-its-kenya-uganda-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/07\/eabl-parent-puts-sh22bn-in-clean-energy-water-at-its-kenya-uganda-plants\/","title":{"rendered":"EABL Parent Puts Sh22bn In Clean Energy, Water At Its Kenya, Uganda Plants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>BY BUSINESS DAILY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>East African Breweries Limited\u2019s parent firm Diageo has announced a Sh22 billion investment in solar energy, biomass power and water recovery at its three plants in Kenya and Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative includes\npumping Sh6.5 billion in a solar, water treatment and biomass equipment,\nfollowed by additional capital investment in ongoing maintenance and\noperations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will see Diageo\u2019s breweries in East Africa switch to renewable energy with biomass boilers \u2014 heated by wood chip, bamboo, and rice husks \u2014 replacing the heavy fuel oil in use currently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new investment\nwill additionally deliver thousands of new green jobs across the entire supply\nchain, particularly in the supply of biofuels in Kenya and Uganda,\u201d said EABL\u2019s\nGroup CEO, Andrew Cowan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative is\nexpected to cut the firm\u2019s carbon emissions by 42,000 tonnes a year and the\namount of water the brewer uses in operations by 40 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBesides reducing our\ncarbon emission by 95 per cent through use of biomass, we will be leveraging\nsolar to deliver a tenth of our power needs,\u201d Mr Cowan said.
