{"id":4298,"date":"2019-08-01T11:11:02","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T08:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4298"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:27","slug":"africas-rising-debt-real-or-imaginary-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/08\/01\/africas-rising-debt-real-or-imaginary-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa\u2019s Rising Debt; Real Or Imaginary Threat?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By\u00a0Collins Mwai<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rising\ndebt level in Africa is increasingly becoming a topical issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there\u2019s divided\nopinion on whether the rising debt levels are a real threat or an alarm fueled\nby myths and misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The average public debt on the continent rose to 45 percent of GDP at the end of 2017 from 29.1 percent in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Globally, the developed countries\u2019 debt level average stands at around 266 percent while emerging markets\u2019 average is around 168 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nineteen countries on the African continent are above 60 percent threshold set by the African Monetary Co-operation Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Labels such as \u2018sinking in debt\u2019 and \u2018debt-ridden\u2019 have, as a result, become common in reference to Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some experts argue that thresholds and targets around debts only serve to raise alarm and are often not relevant to the specific social-economic context of countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than look at\nthresholds, the argument is that stakeholders ought to look at debt repayment\ncapacity\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/news\/africas-rising-debt-real-or-imaginary-threat\">Read more&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Collins Mwai The rising debt level in Africa is increasingly becoming a topical issue.
