{"id":4229,"date":"2019-07-31T10:03:43","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T07:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4229"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:27","slug":"malaria-drugs-failure-rate-high-among-malnourished-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/07\/31\/malaria-drugs-failure-rate-high-among-malnourished-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaria Drugs Failure Rate High Among Malnourished Children"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By SARAH OOKO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaria is among the\nleading causes of disease-related suffering and death in Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It affects 19.4 percent\nof the population based on the 2019 Economic Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most affected are\nusually and children below the age of five and pregnant women due to their low\nimmunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those diagnosed\nwith the disease, treatment with recommended drugs \u2014 known as artemisinin-based\ncombination therapies (ACTs) \u2014 are paramount to effectively manage the disease\nand prevent adverse outcomes including death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the drugs are\neffective at tackling the disease, research now shows that they may be\nunderperforming in severely malnourished children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, malnutrition is\ncommon among children in Kenya\u2019s malaria hotspots due to high poverty levels\nafflicting most families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new study published\nin the Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics Journal has found that severe\nmalnutrition is associated with lower exposure to a type of ACT malaria drug\nknown as artemether-lumefantrine (coartem) among children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most common\ntreatment for uncomplicated malaria caused by parasites known as Plasmodium\nFalciparum that is predominant in Kenya.
