We should be part of the solution.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developing South\nAfrica&#8217;s capacity to predict and adapt to the global climate crisis is\ncritical, and local scientists have an ambitious plan to develop the country&#8217;s\nfirst &#8220;homegrown&#8221; weather and climate change modelling system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put in simple terms, a\n&#8220;numerical climate modelling system&#8221; involves using mathematical\nmodels of the atmosphere, land surface and oceans to simulate future climate\nscenarios. It makes use of supercomputers, parallel computing, satellites,\nradiosondes and other technology. It depends on people with highly-specialised\nskills in areas such as mathematics, physics, numerical modelling and computer\nprogramming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a project, led by\na group of specialists from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), Council\nfor Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the universities of\nWitwatersrand, Pretoria and Cape Town, has just received a major financial\nboost with a US$100,000 (R1.4 million) grant in a research scheme which\ninvolves the African Academy of Sciences, the United Nations, World\nMeteorological Organisation and other partners. <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201907290637.html\">Read\nmore\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Tony Carnie &#8220;We should not just sit and wait for others to bring us solutions.
