A fragile peace deal still has key steps to carry out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fighting stripped the country of much wildlife and the parks\nare rudimentary, lacking lodges, visitors\u2019 centers and roads. There is no\nsignificant tourism; the parks department does not even keep statistics on the\nnumber of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGiven these challenges, the biodiversity of South Sudan is in\nperil,\u201d said DeeAnn Reeder, a conservationist and professor at Bucknell University\nwho has done research there. She called conservation efforts \u201csignificant but\nrelatively small in scale given the vastness of the country\u201d that still has the\npotential for surprise. The documentation of forest elephants in South Sudan\nwas a \u201cvery significant find.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That biodiversity remains rich with more than 300 mammal\nspecies, including 11 primates.
