The Karoo,<\/em> in South Africa, is a harsh\nenvironment in which to make a living out of agriculture\u2014the area is mostly\ndevoid of surface water. Its name is derived from the Khoisan word meaning\n\u201cland of thirst\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The land was traditionally used by pastoralists but\ndrought, overgrazing and predation by wild animals made this activity\nprecarious. Predators were kept in check by fencing, traps, poisons and\nhunting. South Africa is one of the most fenced places on Earth, with huge\nimpacts on biodiversity and animal movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now, a new pilot initiative covering about 25,000\nhectares and using shepherds, has succeeded in increasing production of\nrangeland lamb and beef while simultaneously restoring vegetation and fostering\nbiodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fair Game is a partnership between the Landmark Foundation<\/a>,\nthe National Department of Environmental Affairs and the UN Environment\nProgramme, funded by the Global Environment Facility<\/a>, the Development Bank of South Africa and a local\nphilanthropist.
