{"id":4046,"date":"2019-07-25T11:05:11","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T08:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=4046"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:26","slug":"kenya-should-stick-to-renewable-energy-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/07\/25\/kenya-should-stick-to-renewable-energy-sources\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya Should Stick To Renewable Energy Sources"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Fredrick Njehu<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) has announced\nthat it has contracted a Chinese firm, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC),\nto determine the most suitable location for the construction of Kenya\u2019s first\nnuclear power plant in the next eight to ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese contractor has narrowed down the site to three possible locations in Lake Turkana, Lake Victoria, and the Indian Ocean as the most ideal. The characterization study will cost the taxpayer Sh1.5 billion while the total cost of building a nuclear power plant is estimated at $5 billion (Sh512.7 billion) and is estimated to take at least five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2018,\nKenya had postponed the plan to build the Sh968 billion nuclear power plant by\nnine years to 2036 in favor of renewable energy projects. The revised and\nupdated least cost development plan 2017-2037 by the Ministry of Energy\nprojected that the earliest the country can build the nuclear plant is 2036.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All energy sources were considered in the system expansion planning.
