But The System Isn&#8217;t Ready For Them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By conversation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persistent unemployment has become\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youthpolicy.org\/factsheets\/country\/south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\">synonymous with the youth experience<\/a>\u00a0across South Africa. Youth unemployment rates are almost\u00a0higher than the regional average &#8211; 62% of South Africans between 15 and 35 years are\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/empent\/whatsnew\/WCMS_459490\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">unemployed<\/a> and of this 60 % have <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.section27.org.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Spaull-2013-CDE-report-South-Africas-Education-Crisis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">never been employed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add to this the fact that even those who have jobs are earning below what is considered to be a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/south-africa\/living-wage-individual\" target=\"_blank\">monthly living wage<\/a>\u00a0and what emerges is the youth employment crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agricultural sector\ncould be a key source of job creation for young people. But conventional\nopinion has it that they are turning their backs on the sector despite high\nlevels of unemployment. So what gives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drawing on personal narratives collected from 573 young people across three provinces in South Africa,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/03031853.2018.1564680\" target=\"_blank\">recent <\/a>research has begun building a picture of what young people think and feel about work in agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly,\nagriculture appears to carry a stronger set of negative stigmas than other\ncareers. Examples included themes around agriculture being for poor and elderly\npeople, on the one hand, or, on the other, for wealthier white people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agriculture was also\nperceived by many as a risky career path that involved a lot of hard work for\nlittle financial reward\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/young-south-africans-want-to-farm-but-the-system-isnt-ready-for-them-120298\">read\nmore&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By conversation Persistent unemployment has become\u00a0synonymous with the youth experience\u00a0across South Africa.
