What Are We Waiting For?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Feike Sijbesma<\/em><\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Billions are spent on humanitarian aid, yet nearly 60 million\nchildren across&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/africa\">Africa<\/a>&nbsp;go\nto bed hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts to alleviate the constant cycle of droughts, poverty, and war have caused new problems. The biggest of these is a crippling dependency on food aid that is undermining much of the continent\u2019s efforts to feed itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UN figures show that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/state-of-food-security-nutrition\/en\/\">more than\n250 million people<\/a>&nbsp;in Africa \u2013 one in five \u2013 are\nundernourished, making them vulnerable to disease, deficiencies and\ndevelopmental stunting that stops them reaching their full potential. It has to\nchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richer donor countries need to show they are serious about\nhelping to eradicate malnutrition and hunger by ripping off the bandage of food\naid. This sounds counterintuitive, but donors need to invest in agriculture and\nlocal food manufacturing instead so that African countries can become\nself-sufficient.
