This is the question\nmany are asking following new research that shows how a sequence of two\ntreatments could completely remove the virus in mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first treatment is a long-acting slow-effective release\n(Laser) form of antiretroviral therapy referred to simply as Laser ART. The\nsecond treatment involves the removal of viral DNA using a gene editing tool\ncalled CRISPR-Cas9. A combination of the two methods eliminated the virus from\nnine mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EXPERIMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using 29 mice, a team of research combined gene-editing\ntechnology (CRISPR) and Laser ART to erase HIV DNA from the genomes of the\nanimals in what they call an unprecedented study that was published Tuesday in\nthe journal <em>Nature Communications<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the first step towards showing, to my knowledge, that\nHIV is a curable disease,\u201d said one of the study\u2019s lead authors, Kamel Khalili,\nand the director of the Centre for Neurovirology and the Comprehensive\nNeuroAIDS Centre at Temple University\u2019s Lewis Katz School of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/scienceandhealth\/Hope-for-HIV-cure\/3073694-5187312-sllth2\/index.html\">full\narticle<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/2456-2456-ekxxsk\/index.html\">The\nEastAfrican<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By The EastAfrican Could a cure for HIV be on the horizon?
