Alarm Over Pneumonia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By VERAH OKEYO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long\ntime, physicians have thought bacteria causes pneumonia \u2014 Kenya\u2019s number one\nchild killer that claimed 21,584 in 2017 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a study\nspanning more than 30 years shows that 61 percent of the disease is caused by\nviruses, once again triggering a debate among experts on whether the Health\nministry needs to revise its policy and treatment of pneumonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>APPROVED\nGUIDELINES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pneumonia\nEtiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) study, a million-dollar research\nconducted in Kenya and six other countries with a high burden of the disease,\nfound that viruses caused most of the severe cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The respiratory\nsyncytial virus was the leading pathogen (31 per cent) at all sites in the 30\npathogens.
