{"id":3444,"date":"2019-06-28T08:43:56","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T08:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=3444"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:22","slug":"over-60000-girls-trained-to-make-own-sanitary-pads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/06\/28\/over-60000-girls-trained-to-make-own-sanitary-pads\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 60,000 girls trained to make own sanitary pads"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By\nRitah Mukasa<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to research by Build Africa, millions of girls\nskip up to 20% of their school year simply because they cannot afford sanitary\npads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">25% of the girls and women in rural settings recycle old\nclothes while others use traditional materials like backcloth, banana fibers,\npapers and tissue with 10% of the girls under 15 years of age depending on\nthose makeshift items to manage their menstrual cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, many girls in Uganda cannot afford to buy\nmainstream sanitary products to manage menstruation, an integral and normal\npart of their existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, some girls withdraw from school and community\nactivities or face stigma, isolation, embarrassment, and stress.<br>\n<br>\nThe research continues to indicate that on average, Ugandan\nschool girls reported missing 24 days out of 220 learning days in a year\ntranslating into 11% of school days missed due to menstruation.<br>\n<br>\n24.3% of the girls admit to being stigmatized whenever they\nsoiled their uniforms and as a result, they opted to stay at home until after\nthe period.
