It\u2019s easy to\nfigure out why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the right side of the main street of the dilapidated village\neast of Johannesburg is a fenced-off electricity substation with a red sign\nwarning of pollutants. On the left, a power plant belches emissions from\nburning coal into the air. Both are owned by Eskom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pullens Hope has\ndoomed Rita Phoku\u2019s family, she says. For decades, she lived between a storage\nsite for Eskom\u2019s burnt-coal waste and a coal-mine complex. Four of her five\nchildren suffer from asthma and other respiratory illnesses, while her\n23-year-old daughter, Prudence, died of cancer of the lungs and respiratory\ntract. Her sister, who lived nearby, suffered repeated miscarriages and died of\nrespiratory illness.
