{"id":3310,"date":"2019-06-25T13:00:17","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T13:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=3310"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:22","slug":"climate-apartheid-un-expert-says-human-rights-may-not-survive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/06\/25\/climate-apartheid-un-expert-says-human-rights-may-not-survive\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Climate apartheid\u2019: UN expert says human rights may not survive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By\nThe Guardian<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world is increasingly at risk of \u201cclimate apartheid\u201d, where\nthe rich pay to escape heat and hunger caused by the escalating climate crisis\nwhile the rest of the world suffers, a report from a UN human rights expert has\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip Alston, UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and\nhuman rights, said the impacts of global heating are likely to undermine not\nonly basic rights to life, water, food, and housing for hundreds of millions of\npeople, but also democracy and the rule of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alston is critical of the \u201cpatently inadequate\u201d steps taken by\nthe UN itself, countries, NGOs and businesses, saying they are \u201centirely\ndisproportionate to the urgency and magnitude of the threat\u201d.
