Plans\nto restore degraded coral reefs at the Kenyan Coast are on top gear with youths\ntargeted in the process<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto the Coast Development Authority (CDA), coral reef habitats in the counties\nof Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu have been heavily degraded due to\nbleaching, sedimentation and overfishing by local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMajority\nof coral reef habitats have been heavily degraded because of global warming and\npollution of all kinds,\u201d said CDA Managing Director Dr. Mohamed Keinan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCoral\nreefs are among the most threatened ecosystems largely due to the unprecedented\nglobal warming and climate changes and warned their disappearance will have\neconomic, social and health consequences,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\nan intervention process, he says the authority has developed a three-year\nsustainable restoration programme, a Kenya Climate Change Adaptation Programme\n(KCCAP) funded by Adaptation Fund under the United Nations Framework Convention\nfor Climate Change (UNFCCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nproject involves working at the community level with fishers and groups in\nrebuilding the reefs along the coastline of Wasini Island in Shimoni area of\nKwale, and it is planned to be replicated to other degraded coral reef sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ninitiative follows a cry from locals over a decline in fish catches as\nexplained by Ali Ramadhan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ali\nsays before the programme started in the fishing villages of wasini near the\nborder with Tanzania they used to spend completely nights traversing the waters\nin search of fish but would even sometime return to the landing sites\nempty-handed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\nsays \u201cwith the efforts to protect the marine ecosystem and thus coral reefs the\nfuture of the fishing communities looks better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maimuna\nAbudi a fish seller in Wasini Island said before the reef restoration programme\nstarted fish stocks have been declining and fishing families were feeling the\npressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said in the past local fishermen\ncomplained of a catalogue of frequent arrests, harassment, and detention by the\nTanzanian maritime authorities popularly known as \u201cMazingira police\u2019 whenever\nthey ventured out into the deep-sea. Dr. Keinan says CDA is restoring the coral\nreefs through an innovation called \u2018coral gardening\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ninnovation involves transplantation of coral reefs, tagging them before\ntransplantation, tracking their growth through having their images at various\nstages, measuring their size and storing this data in a database among other\nactivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\nprogramme which is already into its second year has been very successful to\ndate and we intend to expand coral nursery cultivation and transplantation\nacross degraded reefs outside Kwale,\u201d said Dr. Keinan during an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CDA\u2019s\ninnovation emerged top in the category of Most Promising Innovation during the\n2019 Public Service Awards and Recognition Ceremony held on June 7 at the Kenya\nSchool of Government in Nairobi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recognition earned CDA opportunity to represent team Kenya in the 2019 Continental Africa Public Service Rewards and Recognition competition to be held on June 21st \u2013 23rd at KICC Nairobi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
