{"id":3136,"date":"2019-06-17T11:50:46","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T11:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=3136"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:21","slug":"more-investment-in-blood-is-key-to-better-healthcare-for-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/06\/17\/more-investment-in-blood-is-key-to-better-healthcare-for-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"More Investment In Blood Is Key To Better Healthcare For Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By PHILANA MUGYENYI<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the\nglobe, blood continues to be more in demand than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The many\nreasons for that include rising numbers of non-communicable diseases,\nincreasing the availability of new surgeries, national and institutional\npolicies, lack of infrastructure and trained personnel, and limited financial\nresources to support a voluntary non-remunerated donor transfusion service \u2014\nnot to mention existing and emerging threats of transfusion-transmitted\ninfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These factors\nlimit supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World\nHealth Organization (WHO) estimates Kenya\u2019s annual blood requirement at 450,000\nunits, which is expected to rise with population growth. That means, to achieve\nblood sufficiency, at least one per cent of Kenyans must donate blood once a\nyear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, too\nfew blood donors, lack of prioritisation for blood in the health development\nagenda, minimal investment in the blood sector and capacity gaps in the\nhealthcare system are all major obstacles to meeting this target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sadly, the\npeople most affected by the blood shortage are women and children, especially\nduring childbirth.
