A network of environmental journalists in Somalia \u2013\nthe first of its kind in the Horn of Africa nation – was today launched in the\ncapital, Mogadishu. The Somali Environmental Journalists Network (SEJN) aims to\nbring together media professionals to increase reporting on environmental\nchallenges and opportunities in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Network will allow us, for the first time, to\ncome together as media professionals in a deliberate effort to increase the\nmedia focus on environmental issues such as land degradation, deforestation,\npollution and climate change,\u201d Yahya Mohamed, the newly-elected chair of the\nNetwork, said at a media dialogue on charcoal reduction and alternative\nlivelihoods in Mogadishu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Network, he added, will work in collaboration\nwith stakeholders \u2013 including the Somali Government, communities, the private\nsector, donors and UN agencies \u2013 to report in a coherent and inclusive manner\non the challenges and the solutions available to tackle the environmental\nissues facing the country and its sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Network is open to all Somali Journalists\ncovering the environment and sustainable development issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have agreed to take the lead in helping to find\na solution to our environmental challenges. We feel that media has a key role\nto play in changing the situation in our country,\u201d Mohamed said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loss of natural resources is a major contributor to\nthe severity of Somalia\u2019s humanitarian crisis, as well as conflict at national\nand regional level; deforestation and land degradation remain the main\nenvironmental challenges in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saynab Adan, a Somali journalist, said the scale of\ndestruction caused by charcoal trade is not widely known in the country. \u201cThis\nmedia dialogue has opened our eyes to the role we can play in reversing the\nenvironmental degradation in our country,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis Network of journalists will be a key partner\nin supporting the ongoing environmental interventions in the country \u2013 it will\nincrease awareness on environmental conservation among communities, policy\nmakers and other stakeholders,\u201d said Hussein M. Sheikh Hussein, the Federal\nGovernment of Somalia\u2019s Minister of Livestock, Forestry and Range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister said the overexploitation of forest and\nrangeland resources was responsible frequent drought and floods that affect\ncommunities, creating a chronic humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMembers of this Network know very well the\nenvironmental situation in the country and are close to their communities;\ntheir work will certainly contribute in reversing the current environmental\ntrend in the country,\u201d Hussein added. \u201cI call on all UN Agencies and donors to\nsupport the network.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SEJN was launched with support from UN\nEnvironment, the UN Development Programme and the Food and Agriculture\nOrganization of the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
