Output is\nshrinking as operators capitulate to stubbornly high costs, regular strikes and\nthe geological challenges of tapping the world\u2019s deepest mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile,\nGhana, a country whose gold mining industry dates back to the 19th century, is\nbenefiting from lower-cost mines, friendlier policies and new development\nprojects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ndifficulties facing South African gold mines mean output is contracting even\nthough it\u2019s got the world\u2019s second-largest reserves of the metal, according to\nestimates from the US Geological Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Ghana,\ngold output jumped 12% in 2018, according to data from the Ghana Chamber of\nMines. Small producers account for the largest share of the total, although\nGhana also hosts some of the world\u2019s biggest gold miners, including No. 1\nproducer Newmont Goldcorp.
