{"id":2931,"date":"2019-06-06T08:10:59","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T08:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=2931"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","slug":"more-investments-in-food-security-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/06\/06\/more-investments-in-food-security-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"More Investments In Food Security Needed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By JEMIMAH NJUKI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is plenty of science to guide us on what we need to\ndo to achieve greater food security, provide better nutrition, and prevent food\nshortages and hunger in Africa even in the face of a changing climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What has been lacking,\nhowever, is consistent and broad-based investment to support smallholder\nfarmers so that they can be resilient and productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last few months,\nheavy rains have pounded some eastern and southern African countries. In\nMalawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, lives have been lost and people\ndisplaced after their homes were washed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The greatest\ncontradiction though is that just a few months prior to this, the region was\nhit by a drought leading to hundreds of thousands of people going without\nadequate food. By March 2019, the UN had declared that 13 million people were\nfood insecure and in need of assistance in southern Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global data also\nsuggests hard times ahead for smallholders.
