{"id":2909,"date":"2019-06-04T07:30:44","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T07:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=2909"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","slug":"study-shows-nairobi-river-has-alarming-levels-of-antibiotics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/06\/04\/study-shows-nairobi-river-has-alarming-levels-of-antibiotics\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Shows Nairobi River Has Alarming Levels Of Antibiotics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By NASIBO KABALE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the world\u2019s\nbest-known rivers, including the Nairobi River, are contaminated with\nantibiotics that exceed levels considered to be safe in health terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a global\nstudy conducted by York University researchers, concentrations of antibiotics\nfound in some of the world&#8217;s rivers exceed \u201csafe\u201d levels by up to 300 times.\nSites, where antibiotics exceeded these levels by the greatest degree, were in\nBangladesh, Kenya, Ghana, Pakistan, and Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to the&nbsp;<em>Business Daily<\/em>, Prof Alistair Boxall, theme leader of\nthe York Environmental Sustainability Institute, said that samples collected\nfrom the Nairobi River revealed that the most prevalent antibiotic was\nsulfamethoxazole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sulfamethoxazole is\nnormally given in combination with Trimethoprim.
