{"id":2903,"date":"2019-06-04T07:20:31","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T07:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=2903"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","slug":"algeria-now-fourth-african-country-to-be-declared-malaria-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/06\/04\/algeria-now-fourth-african-country-to-be-declared-malaria-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Algeria Now Fourth African Country To Be Declared Malaria-Free"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By EUNICE KILONZO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Algeria is now\nthe fourth African country after Lesotho, Mauritius and Seychelles to be\ndeclared malaria-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nannouncement on May 22 by WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also\nlisted Argentina as being malaria-free, making it the second country in the\nAmericas to achieve that status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Ghebreyesus\nspoke on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the World Health Assembly in\nGeneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ncertification is granted when a country proves that it has interrupted malaria\ntransmission for at least three consecutive years within its borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past\nfour years, Maldives (2015), Sri Lanka (2016), and Uzbekistan and Paraguay\n(2018) have also been declared malaria-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Winnie\nMpanju-Shumbusho, board chairperson of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership \u2014 the\nlargest global platform for action towards a world free from malaria \u2014 termed\nAlgeria\u2019s case a \u201cmonumental achievement\u201d for a disease that kills one child\nevery two minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Algeria and\nArgentina reported their last cases of indigenous malaria in 2013 and 2010\nrespectively. They managed to become malaria-free through a number of measures.\nOne, over the past decade, they improved surveillance of the disease, rapidly\nidentifying and treating any case. Second, both countries provided free\ndiagnosis and treatment within their borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Algeria\u2019s\nmalaria-free certification comes at a time when a vaccine, known as RTS,S\n(which had been in development for 30 years), was launched in Malawi in April\nthis year, in a landmark pilot programme.
