{"id":2880,"date":"2019-06-03T08:40:31","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T08:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=2880"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:30:19","slug":"kenya-outshines-neighbors-in-access-to-mains-electricity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2019\/06\/03\/kenya-outshines-neighbors-in-access-to-mains-electricity\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya Outshines Neighbors In Access To Mains Electricity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By EDWIN OKOTH<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya leads all its East African neighbors in deepening access\nto electricity by a wide margin according to a recent report by the World Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country was also listed among the top performers in\nexpanding access to power in the period between 2010 and 2017 ranking together\nwith bigger economies such as India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At over 75 percent access currently (63.8 percent by 2017), the\ncountry\u2019s rate was almost triple Uganda\u2019s 22 percent and almost double\nTanzania\u2019s 32.8 percent and Rwanda\u2019s 34.1 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya, which aims to achieve a universal access to electricity\nby 2022, had also an impressive rate of expanding reach compared to its\nneighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country\u2019s annualized increase in access stood at 6.4\npercent, just below Afghanistan\u2019s 7.9 and Cambodia\u2019s 8.3 percent. Its neighbors\ncontinued to lag with Rwanda at 3.4 percent while Uganda and Tanzania were\nincreasing access at 1.4 and 2.4 percent respectively.
