The World\nHealth Organization has for the first time recognised “burnout” in\nits International Classification of Diseases (ICD), which is widely used as a\nbenchmark for diagnosis and health insurers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision,\nreached during the World Health Assembly in Geneva, which wraps up on Tuesday,\ncould help put to rest decades of debate among experts over how to define\nburnout, and whether it should be considered a medical condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the latest\nupdate of its catalogue of diseases and injuries around the world, WHO defines\nburnout as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace\nstress that has not been successfully managed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said the\nsyndrome was characterised by three dimensions: “1) feelings of energy\ndepletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one’s job, or\nfeelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and 3) reduced\nprofessional efficacy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Burnout\nrefers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be\napplied to describe experiences in other areas of life,” according to the\nclassification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The updated ICD\nlist, dubbed ICD-11, was drafted last year following recommendations from\nhealth experts around the world, and was approved on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is\nthe first time” burnout has been included in the classification, WHO\nspokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ICD-11,\nwhich is to take effect in January 2022, contains several other additions,\nincluding classification of “compulsive sexual behaviour” as a mental\ndisorder, although it stops short of lumping the condition together with\naddictive behaviours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does however\nfor the first time recognise video gaming as an addiction, listing it alongside\ngambling and drugs like cocaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The updated\nlist removes transgenderism from its list of mental disorders meanwhile,\nlisting it instead under the chapter on “conditions related to sexual health”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
