Known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lobitocorridor.org\/history-background\"><strong data-start=\"596\" data-end=\"615\">Lobito Corridor<\/strong><\/a>, this infrastructure megaproject connects inland resource-rich regions to global markets through the port of Lobito \u2014 but its true value may lie beyond the rails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"1125\">The corridor, named after the bustling Angolan port city of Lobito, stretches across <strong data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"882\">ten provinces<\/strong> in the three countries and is anchored by the <strong data-start=\"929\" data-end=\"965\">1,200-kilometre Benguela railway<\/strong>. Traditionally used to transport minerals, the corridor is now being expanded and upgraded to serve as a faster, greener, and more inclusive channel for trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1311\">With its strategic design and sustainable potential, the Lobito Corridor offers Central Africa a rare chance to build an economic model that works <em data-start=\"1274\" data-end=\"1310\">for people, planet, and prosperity<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1692\">For decades, mineral exports from landlocked Zambia and the DRC have relied heavily on long, road-based routes to ports in South Africa, Tanzania, and Mozambique \u2014 journeys that are slow, costly, and carbon-intensive. In contrast, the Lobito Corridor slashes transport times by nearly half and introduces rail as a cleaner alternative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1694\" data-end=\"2022\">Rail transport consumes <strong data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1743\">up to 80% less energy<\/strong> than road freight and emits significantly fewer greenhouse gases. The corridor could reduce food loss, encourage agro-processing, and support the growth of <strong data-start=\"2783\" data-end=\"2812\">climate-smart agriculture<\/strong>, aligning with <strong data-start=\"2828\" data-end=\"2851\">SDG 2 (Zero Hunger)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2856\" data-end=\"2899\">SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2902\" data-end=\"3082\">Local economies that were previously disconnected now have a lifeline to regional and international value chains \u2014 a crucial step in building <strong data-start=\"3044\" data-end=\"3081\">inclusive and resilient economies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3115\" data-end=\"3287\">Despite these advantages, sustainability advocates and trade experts are sounding a clear warning: the corridor must not become just another <strong data-start=\"3256\" data-end=\"3286\">pipeline for raw materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3289\" data-end=\"3620\">Africa\u2019s history of exporting unprocessed resources has led to economic vulnerability, environmental exploitation, and limited job creation. As Jacob Makambwe of the Southern Africa Cross Border Traders Association explains, \u201cWithout local value addition, we\u2019re simply fueling industries elsewhere while our communities stay poor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3622\" data-end=\"3937\">The solution? Establish <strong data-start=\"3646\" data-end=\"3725\">processing hubs, battery production facilities, and mineral refining plants<\/strong> along the corridor \u2014 especially for high-demand resources like copper, cobalt, and lithium. These steps would reduce export volumes, cut emissions, and create skilled jobs, especially for young people and women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3939\" data-end=\"4272\">Encouragingly, Zambia and the DRC have already committed to <strong data-start=\"3999\" data-end=\"4027\">joint battery production<\/strong>, tapping into the clean energy economy. With strategic investment, the Lobito Corridor could evolve into a <strong data-start=\"4135\" data-end=\"4160\">Green Industrial Belt<\/strong> that powers Africa\u2019s transition and supplies the world with ethically sourced, sustainably processed materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4326\" data-end=\"4620\">The corridor is supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afdb.org\/en\">African Development Bank (AfDB)<\/a>, which has committed $8.1 million for trade facilitation and management systems. It represents the choice between extractivism and empowerment, between short-term gains and long-term resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5499\" data-end=\"5659\">With the right investments, policies, and partnerships, it can become a powerful lever for <strong data-start=\"5590\" data-end=\"5658\">climate-smart growth, regional cooperation, and economic justice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5661\" data-end=\"5756\">Africa doesn\u2019t just need corridors that move goods.
