The event focused on aligning the continent\u2019s maritime sector with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/\">International Maritime Organization\u2019s (IMO)<\/a> Revised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/OurWork\/Environment\/Pages\/2023-IMO-Strategy-on-Reduction-of-GHG-Emissions-from-Ships.aspx\">Strategy for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Ships.<\/a><br \/>\nOrganized by the IMO in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mibema.go.ke\/\">Kenya\u2019s Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dma.dk\/\">Danish Maritime Authority,<\/a> the workshop aimed to translate ambition into action. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized the importance of implementation, stating, \u201cThe IMO\u2019s climate ambition is clear. The focus now should be on action and implementation, and IMO stands ready to support African Member States in their efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the two-day discussions, delegates identified practical measures to advance green shipping across the continent. These included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing the ratification and implementation of MARPOL Annex VI, which regulates ship emissions and air pollution.<\/li>\n<li>Developing and implementing National Action Plans for GHG Reduction to set country-specific strategies.<\/li>\n<li>Advancing sustainable port development to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.<\/li>\n<li>Promoting the production and availability of alternative fuels such as biofuels and green hydrogen.<\/li>\n<li>Expanding green marine employment opportunities and fostering investment in sustainable shipping initiatives.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening seafarers\u2019 training programs to equip them with skills needed for a greener maritime sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hon. Hassan Ali Joho, Cabinet Secretary at Kenya\u2019s Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, highlighted Africa\u2019s role in the green transition within the Global South. \u201cOur ports, shipping routes, and maritime industries are integral to global trade and must evolve in alignment with the net-zero emissions target by 2050,\u201d he stated. \u201cBy doing so, we can create green jobs, attract investments, and build resilient economies while addressing the pressing challenges of climate change.\u201d<br \/>\nThe discussions highlighted Africa\u2019s progress in implementing sustainable maritime policies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/how-can-the-shipping-sector-unlock-the-first-wave-of-net-zero-emission-shipping\/\">How can the shipping sector unlock the \u2018first wave\u2019 of net zero emission shipping?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, Comorian officials, with IMO cooperation, successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/lca.logcluster.org\/21-comoros-port-assessment#:~:text=The%20main%20port%20of%20Comoros,prevent%20larger%20ships%20from%20docking.\">assessed the Port of Mutsamudu on Anjouan<\/a>, demonstrating ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into port operations.<br \/>\nGreen shipping is not just an environmental initiative but a strategic economic imperative for Africa, given its reliance on maritime trade. Ports across the continent, from Durban to Lagos, are key drivers of economic activity and must adapt to climate change impacts such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events. The transition to sustainable maritime operations is crucial for ensuring long-term resilience and competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The Mombasa workshop reaffirmed Africa\u2019s commitment to leading the global green shipping agenda.
