And while the pandemic may be the most widely publicized example, it is hardly the only case in which those who are already vulnerable bear the brunt of the impact. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, snake bite was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jvat.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40409-017-0127-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">re-declared as a neglected tropical disease<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/snakebite-envenoming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the World Health Organization<\/a>, about 5.4 million snake bites occur each year \u2013 even though most of their harmful consequences could be prevented by making safe and effective antivenoms more widely available and accessible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.unenvironment.org\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/snake_1_-_Photo_by_Reuters.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"Extraction of venom from a Coastal Taipan at the Australian Reptile Park\"\/><figcaption><em>Extraction of venom from a Coastal Taipan at the Australian Reptile Park. Of these, the majority affect women, children and farmers in poor rural communities in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, where health systems are weakest and medical resources sparse. Ultimately, between 81,000 and 137,000 people die, and there are around three times as many amputations and other permanent disabilities each year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a great example of how better international and cross-sector cooperation on a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/one-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Health<\/a>&nbsp;approach can make a huge difference,\u201d says Julian Blanc, a wildlife expert with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018One Health\u2019 is based on the understanding that human health and animal health are interdependent and linked to the health of the ecosystems in which they co-exist.
