In many cases, religious leaders have become environmental influencers, championing nature-based solutions that experts say are crucial to saving the ecosystems that underpin human society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFaith communities \u2013 motivated by spiritual values and driven by an ethical responsibility \u2013 wield enormous social and political influence when it comes to promoting action to restore ecosystems,\u201d says Iyad Abumoghli, Director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/about-un-environment\/faith-earth-initiative\">Faith for Earth Initiative<\/a>&nbsp;of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe avenues for faith actors to contribute to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.decadeonrestoration.org\/\">UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030<\/a>&nbsp;are explored in our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/xmlui\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/34944\/FFEI.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">Strategy for the Role of Faith Actors in Restoration of Ecosystems<\/a>,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.decadeonrestoration.org\/\">United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030<\/a>,&nbsp;which launches later this year, here\u2019s a look at what some faith-based organizations are doing to protect and restore natural spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saving Ethiopia\u2019s forests<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethiopia is home to 35,000 forests owned by Orthodox Tewahedo churches, to which more than half of Ethiopians belong. These fertile oases, ranging from 3 to 300 hectares are remnants of the natural forests that once covered Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tewahedo Church and local residents are trying to slow the attrition of church-owned forests, which they see as symbols of heaven on Earth.
