The year 2020 was 1.2\u00b0C above pre-industrial era (1880) temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/press-release\/new-climate-predictions-assess-global-temperatures-coming-five-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WMO predicts<\/a>&nbsp;a 20 per cent probability that temperatures will temporarily exceed 1.5\u00b0C as early as 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe speed at which temperatures are increasing is alarming,\u201d says Pascal Peduzzi, Director, GRID-Geneva, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). \u201cAt this rate, we may reach +1.5\u00b0C in the next 15 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paris Agreement<\/a>, Member States committed to limit global warming&nbsp;to well below 2\u00b0C,&nbsp;preferably to 1.5\u00b0C, compared to pre-industrial levels. Every country&nbsp;signing up to the agreement&nbsp;set out a target, known as a nationally determined contribution (NDC) for reducing&nbsp;greenhouse gas emissions&nbsp;by around 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January this year, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/speeches\/2021-01-28\/remarks-member-states-priorities-for-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a02021 was a critical year for climate, calling for multilateral action.
