The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=uriserv%3AOJ.L_.2020.433.01.0011.01.ENG&amp;toc=OJ%3AL%3A2020%3A433%3ATOC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new legislation<\/a>&nbsp;is part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligentliving.co\/europes-green-new-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Green Deal<\/a>&nbsp;and the bloc\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/circular-economy\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Circular Economy Action Plan<\/a>. The move is in response to a conference held last year in which 187 countries agreed to implement plastic restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a European Commission\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/news\/plastic-waste-shipments-new-eu-rules-importing-and-exporting-plastic-waste-2020-12-22_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>, the changes to the bloc\u2019s 2006 Waste Shipment Regulation will apply to intra-EU shipments, exports, and imports of plastic waste \u2013 with various shipments being subjected to a prior notification and consent procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the plastic sent isn\u2019t being recycled and ends up in a landfill, incineration, or the ocean. The countries receiving the waste often can\u2019t sustainably treat it.
