{"id":11810,"date":"2020-12-16T07:19:59","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T04:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=11810"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:31:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:31:22","slug":"14-countries-join-the-worlds-largest-ocean-sustainability-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2020\/12\/16\/14-countries-join-the-worlds-largest-ocean-sustainability-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"14 countries join the world\u2019s largest ocean sustainability initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Governments accountable for 40% of the world\u2019s coastlines have pledged to stop the flow of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligentliving.co\/epa-plastic-pollution-top-priority\/\">plastic pollution<\/a>&nbsp;into the oceans, restore declining fish populations, and end overfishing in the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 2, the leaders of 14 countries set out a series of commitments that mark&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceanpanel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the world\u2019s largest ocean sustainability initiative<\/a>. These countries include Norway, Australia, Palau, Portugal, Namibia, Mexico, Fiji, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Japan, Jamaica, Chile, and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s vow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To end subsidies that contribute to overfishing,<\/li><li>To stop illegal fishing through better management and more vigorous enforcement,<\/li><li>To reduce bycatch and discards,<\/li><li>And to implement national fisheries plans based on scientific guidance.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The countries involved, members of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, have also promised to sustainably manage all the ocean areas within their national jurisdiction (called exclusive economic zones) by 2025.
