It\u2019s the third consecutive year that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligentliving.co\/coca-cola-named-most-polluting-brand-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coca-Cola is ranked #1<\/a>&nbsp;and the other companies following in 2nd and 3rd. As much as they all promote sustainability goals, the evidence shows their tactics aren\u2019t working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The environmental initiative, Break Free From Plastic, had 15,000 volunteers in 55 countries collect plastic litter from their surrounding environment. Each person kept a record of the garbage they collected and what brand each piece came from. All the data was compiled into an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/globalbrandauditreport2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0annual audit.<\/a>\u00a0The initiative then wrote a report \u2013 as it does every year \u2013 about the survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, 346,494 pieces of plastic were discarded in parks, rivers, beaches, and other sites \u2013 63% were labeled with a consumer brand. Coca-Cola was ranked the world\u2019s #1 plastic polluter in 51 out of 55 countries, with 13,834 pieces of litter collected \u2013 more than Nestl\u00e9 (8,633) and Pepsi (5,155) and combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The majority of plastic we come across cannot be recycled. We find it everywhere, in our waste stream, on our land. When it is buried, it contaminates our soil. Whatever cannot be recycled must not be produced.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A separate survey by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/mar\/31\/report-reveals-massive-plastic-pollution-footprint-of-drinks-firms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NGO Tearfund<\/a>\u00a0published in March found Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestl\u00e9, and Unilever responsible for 500,000 tons of plastic pollution in just six countries yearly.
