{"id":11588,"date":"2020-11-16T09:24:26","date_gmt":"2020-11-16T06:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africasustainabilitymatters.com\/?p=11588"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:31:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:31:20","slug":"africa-who-to-tackle-20-neglected-tropical-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rayscohosting.best\/ASM\/2020\/11\/16\/africa-who-to-tackle-20-neglected-tropical-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa: WHO to tackle 20 neglected tropical diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Delegates attending the virtual session of the 73rd World Health Assembly (12 November) have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/12-11-2020-neglected-tropical-diseases-world-health-assembly-endorses-bold-new-road-map-targets-for-2030\">endorsed<\/a>&nbsp;a new road map that sets specific targets to tackle 20 neglected tropical diseases [NTDs] by 2030 through focused interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NTDs, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/WHO-UCN-NTD-2020.01\">road map said<\/a>, &#8220;are a diverse set of 20\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scidev.net\/sub-saharan-africa\/health\/disease\/\">diseases<\/a>\u00a0and disease groups [e.g. lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, human African trypanosomiasis, leprosy, and so on with a singular commonality: their impact on impoverished communities. Together they affect more than a billion people with devastating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scidev.net\/sub-saharan-africa\/health\/\">health<\/a>, social and economic consequences&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The targets in the new road map (2021 &#8211; 2030) include: decrease in the number of people needing treatment for NTDs by 90 per cent, elimination of at least one NTD in 100 countries, eradication of two NTDs, i.e. dracunculiasis and yaws, and decrease in the NTD-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) by 75 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Countries are both the drivers and the beneficiaries of progress towards the 2030 targets for NTDs.
