Fishing communities, businesses and consumers alike rely on healthy ecosystems and fisheries to continue to source, sell and eat fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, over a third of the world\u2019s fisheries have been overexploited and the health of the ecosystems on which they depend is in decline. Despite these realities, seafood still holds much promise. The World Bank has&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/documents.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/347431487184280381\/The-sunken-billions-revisited-progress-and-challenges-in-global-marine-fisheries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicated<\/a>&nbsp;that fishery production globally could be worth $83 billion more each year if fisheries were managed at sustainable levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fisheries are an inherently renewable resource. They can provide more fish, guarantee more predictable and resilient incomes, and deliver higher environmental benefits if we invest in their recovery and continued management. At present,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msc.org\/for-business\/fisheries\/developing-world-and-small-scale-fisheries\/fips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fishery Improvement Projects<\/a>\u00a0(FIPs) \u2013 many of which work towards third party certification \u2013 are a primary mechanism for achieving these goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, funding for FIPs comes predominantly from governmental and philanthropic sources, and it is inadequate for the major work needed.
