At the same time, it is important to recognise the increased risks posed by one of the continent&#8217;s most deadly diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malaria results in nearly half a million deaths globally every year, with about 90% of cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to disruptions of the delivery of mosquito nets and anti-malarial medicines this year, however, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa could\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications-detail\/the-potential-impact-of-health-service-disruptions-on-the-burden-of-malaria\">double<\/a>. In fact, it is possible that disruptions due to COVID-19 will result in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/pdfs\/journals\/langlo\/PIIS2214-109X(20)30288-6.pdf\">more deaths<\/a>\u00a0from malaria, TB and HIV than the coronavirus itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What should countries where malaria is endemic do to prevent this scenario?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/africanarguments.org\/category\/african-arguments\/country\/west\/ghana\/\">Ghana<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/africanarguments.org\/category\/african-arguments\/country\/west\/sierra-leone\/\">Sierra Leone<\/a>\u00a0provide interesting case studies. These two West African countries among fifteen African countries that, as of 2019, have started implementing their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speakupafrica.org\/program\/zero-malaria-starts-with-me\/?color=blue\">Zero Malaria Starts With Me<\/a>\u00a0campaigns.
