Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), has today launched the Strategic Business Plan for the establishment of a Plastic Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PRO will drive collective Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the country, whereby a producer\u2019s responsibility for a product is extended to the post-consumer stage of a product\u2019s life cycle, whilst turning plastic waste into valuable resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Strategic Plan, developed by KAM in partnership with Sustainable Inclusive Business under the KEPSA Foundation and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, sets out the direction of KAM\u2019s priorities in the waste value chain and key action in effecting the steps towards a clean Kenya as industry moves from a linear to a circular economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
KAM Chair, Mr Mucai Kunyiha observed that the local manufacturing sector is committed to and is at the forefront of driving the establishment of a circular economy, towards sustainably managing waste, and conserving and restoring our environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Plan\u2019s focus areas to accelerate a circular economy are to increase collection and recycling simultaneously through creating value and markets for the recycled plastics, enhance industry awareness on sustainable sourcing and production and develop products designed for recyclability.\u00a0We are optimistic that Kenya will achieve its targets of being \u201ca Green Hub\u201d within the region\u00a0by\u00a0cementing\u00a0Kenya\u2019s leadership in matters Climate Change and the Green Economy,\u201d\u00a0explained\u00a0Mr Kunyiha.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking during the launch, Netherlands Ambassador to Kenya,\u00a0Amb.\u00a0Maarten\u00a0Brouwer\u00a0said, \u201cWe need to value\u00a0the\u00a0role of the private sector\u00a0towards accelerating circular economy in Kenya.\u00a0To support these efforts, governments can give financial incentives, invest in research and development\u00a0and encourage innovation.\u00a0This shall encourage industries to be willing to learn, explore an experiment with various solutions\u00a0that can be used to manage waste in the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that sustainability is everybody\u2019s role to play and needs a holistic approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“By making the\u00a0collaborative spirit\u00a0between government and private sector\u00a0feasible, we shall secure the future of industry. \u00a0The waste management\u00a0challenges\u00a0we face can be\u00a0converted\u00a0into new business opportunities\u00a0by\u00a0rethinking\u00a0materials\u00a0and\u00a0redesigning\u00a0products. This shall reduce operational and energy costs\u00a0for the manufacturing sector, through sustainable production and consumption.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ministry of\u00a0Environment and\u00a0Forestry\u00a0Director of Environmental Education and Awareness, Dr\u00a0Ayub Macharia\u00a0reiterated government\u2019s support towards environmental conservation, sustainability, and circular economy, saying,\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0championed\u00a0the\u00a0development of\u00a0the framework of cooperation (FOC)\u00a0between\u00a0industry and government to monitor the progress of management of PET Consumer Waste. We also supported the launch of the Kenya Plastic Action Plan last year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the formation of a PRO was informed by the amount of waste in the environment, hence the need to manage it by working with the private sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The lack of an EPR scheme in the country led to\u00a0low waste\u00a0collection. This is attributed to inadequate infrastructure in the waste management value chain.\u00a0The strategic business plan shall\u00a0guide us in managing post-consumer plastic waste in the country, hence conserving our environment for future generations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The launch of the Strategic Business Plan for a Plastic Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) is in line with commitments made in the Kenya Plastic Action Plan, launched last year.
